Primarily the Hogg/Hogge Families of Gloucester and York Counties, Virginia
but, Including Other Hogg Fanilies from Virginia and Elsewhere
We set up this site to present family trees of Hogg families. We have a liberal perspective regarding the spelling of the name. The most common spelling variations that we see are Hogg, Hogge, Hogue, Hoge, and Hoag.
Our point of view begins with our own Hogg/Hogge families that have been in Gloucester and York Counties, Virginia since the mid 1600's. Many of the people of this area, including our Hogg forefathers, were watermen; hence the Chesapeake Bay Waterman motif.
To a lesser, but by no means neglegable, extent, we include other Hogg families that originated in, or passed through, Virginia.
To an even lesser extent, we include information on Hogg families that lived elsewhere in the colonies and around the world.
This site is derived from, but hopefully an improvement over, the earlier wed site http://hdhdata.org/roots/. For the forseeable future, we will be migrating data from the old web site to the new web site. During this migrsation period, we will be maintsaining both web sites. You will find many places on this web site where following a link takes you to the old web site.
We are advocates of the use of DNA to provide sound scientific evidence that allows us to sort out the conections between different Hogg families. The Hogg DNA Project web site is http://hdhdata.org/hoggdna.html.
In four words, we seek the truth. Perhaps the most articulate statement of our guiding principle is the following quotation by Carl Sagan:
"We wish to pursue the truth no matter where it leads, but to find the truth, we need imagination and skepticism both. We will not be afraid to speculate, but we will be careful to distinguish speculation from fact." Carl Sagan, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, 1980
We have chosen the TNG software, which presents information using dynamic web pages. The old site employed static web pages. This software supports mulitiple trees and branches allowing us to organize family trees based on descent from a founding ancestor. Do not expect everyone on this web site to be related to everyone else, or to one of us. Each tree represents a specific family. However, there are many interconnections between many of the trees. You will find many places in each tree where a link takes you to a different tree. In many cases, a link will take you to our old web site, and in some cases, a link will take you to an external web site maintained by somone else.
We are presenting data on this web site that we have obtained from other sources and are not a result of our personal research. In many cases, we will not be able to assist visitors by providing information beyond what we have here. In some cases, our information may be wrong. Please provide any corrections and additions that you can.
The home page for all the trees on this web site is http://hoggfamily.org/trees. Using the search window on this page allows you to search the entire database on this site.
At this time, we include the following trees and branches, either on this web site or elsewhere as indicated:
This web site will be more useful if it becomes a colaboration of researchers specializing in a wide assortment of Hogg families. If you are a researcher of a Hogg family and would like to be the keeper of the tree or branch for your family on this site, we invite you to join us.
